Research
I am a Research Associate at the Centre for Neuroscience in Education, Department of Psychology. My research interests include the analysis of brain networks (multilayer brain networks, graph theory) and understanding the neurophysiological basis of speech processing in children. To this end, I primarily use a brain imaging technique known as magnetoencephalography (MEG). MEG measures tiny magnetic fields generated by the brain at the surface of scalp. In our typical experiments, participants listen to stories or rhythmic sounds while we record changes in their brain waves. Our goal is to understand these mechanisms better and develop potential remediation strategies for children with dyslexia. My chief interest is in understanding how rhythms in human speech map on to neural oscillations and how this mechanism develops in children.
At the University of Cambridge Kanad has supervised the projects of undergraduate students, in addition to being a graduate advisor for PhD students at CNE. These projects include:
- Lloyd Morgan (BSc) - "Coughs, Sneezes, Laughter, and Developmental Dyslexia"
- Lyla Parvez (PhD) - "Atypical neural processing of speech stimuli in children with Developmental Language Disorder"
