Dr Fiona Kyle was awarded two post-doctoral grants by the Finnish Centre of Excellence to develop a novel remediation game based on rhyme and spelling in collaboration with Professor Goswami (2008-2009, 2009-2011) who is an expert advisor to the Finnish Centre. The game is currently being trialled in primary schools with at-risk 6- and 7-year-old English children. A second strand using number is also being investigated. These grants are part of a larger Finnish initiative "Graphogame", with a number of European and African partners. Fiona's other research interests focus on developmental patterns of literacy acquisition in deaf children, the cognitive abilities important for emerging literacy in the deaf, the skills that enable some deaf children to become comparatively good readers, and memory development in children. In March 2011 Fiona moved to the University of Bedfordshire to take up the post of Senior Lecturer in Developmental Psychology.
